What is dashicons in wordpress?

Dashicons are a pictographic language of web-related actions available to WordPress user interfaces, and as of WordPress 3.8, they are integrated into the WordPress core. Dashicons are designed to be clean and minimal, matching the aesthetic of the WordPress admin area. The icons come in two sizes—regular size and a larger one for high resolution screens. They are also designed at popular sizes used in an array of form factors and devices.

Dashicons provide 16×16 pixel icons with multiple levels of transparency that can be customized for various uses. They can be used in themes or plugins to convey information, allow navigation or perform actions. For example, it is possible to add an icon to your site footer that links back to the home page using Dashicons's Home icon. Additionally, it is possible to add a new post or edit an existing post using corresponding "New Post" and "Edit Post" icons.

As of WordPress 4.3, Dashicons are also part of the responsive adminbar which includes a mobile-friendly menu under 'My Sites' menu item (this menu opens when you click on the 'hamburger menu' icon). This brings a lot more control over how icons in your website can appear on small screen devices than was previously possible with the larger size "desktop" version only.

For theme developers who want additional control over how their theme displays on all devices, custom Dashicon packages can be created with a few more lines of code—perfect for creating custom designs that match existing branding elements while remaining extremely lightweight in terms of download size and page weight load time on mobile devices and low powered computers/tablets alike.
